In reading class this year we will focus on reading and understanding literature and nonfiction texts.
We will be reading a variety of novels from the Elementary Battle of the Books.
Along with reading novels, we will also read short stories, poetry, nonfiction, and dramas. While reading these texts we will focus on interpreting information, critical thinking skills, and inferencing.
Reading in the upper elementary level focuses on teaching students to understand and develop ideas about the texts they read. This becomes the time where students are encouraged to think deeper about the texts they read.
To help students become better readers, it is also important for them to have a vast knowledge of vocabulary. Part of fifth-grade language arts is enhancing students' knowledge and use of vocabulary.
Social studies lessons will be integrated into language arts. We will read about and study a variety of social studies topics during reading class while learning about historical and current events.
