Hello!

My name is John Mullen, and I teach English as a Second Language (ESL) here at Charles England Elementary. I serve as a resource teacher for students whose first language is not English, working together with their classroom teachers to determine how I can best supplement what they are learning in their grade level. Students come to me for an average of 25 minutes per day, 5 days per week. We learn a lot, and we have a lot of fun in the process.

I have a bachelor's degree in English from Wake Forest University, a master's degree in divinity from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, and both master's and doctoral degrees in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Most importantly, my wife Lisa and I have been married 34 years, and we have two grown children -- Anna (29) and Isaac (25). Family first!

This is my seventh year teaching here, and my 25th year teaching ESL full time in North Carolina public schools. Before that I taught ESL to adults, migrant farmworkers, summer school Kindergarteners, and college students in China. You can tell that I love the English language.

However, I also love all other languages, and I believe we all benefit from knowing other languages and cultures. I strive to demonstrate respect for those differences in my classroom, the school building, and the community in general. While I work almost exclusively with Spanish-speaking students here, I have taught people of well over 20 different language backgrounds.

Mi nombre es John Mullen y enseño inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) aquí en Charles England Elementary. Sirvo como maestro de recursos para estudiantes cuyo primer idioma no es el inglés, trabajando junto con sus maestros de clase para determinar cómo puedo complementar mejor lo que están aprendiendo en su nivel de grado. Si bien aquí trabajo casi exclusivamente con estudiantes de habla hispana, he enseñado a personas de más de 20 orígenes lingüísticos diferentes.
