Lexington City Board of Education Hires New Superintendent

The Lexington City Board of Education is excited to announce the selection and election of Dr. Nakia Hardy as the next superintendent of the Lexington City Schools (LCS). Dr. Hardy will take office on July 1, 2023

The board thoughtfully and carefully reviewed applications from a diverse field of twenty-five excellent candidates from six different states. Although many qualified candidates applied, the board felt that Dr. Hardy’s experience, leadership, and dedication to students and staff would best serve LCS students, employees, and the community for years to come. The board is confident Dr. Hardy will lead the school system to even higher achievement.

Dr. Hardy has enjoyed a long and very successful career in public education spanning more than twenty-five years in North Carolina and Maryland. Since 2018, she has served as the Deputy Superintendent for Durham Public Schools (DPS). Prior to joining DPS, Dr. Hardy served as the Chief Academic Officer for Guilford County Schools, the executive director for teaching and learning for Baltimore City Public Schools, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Rockingham County Schools, and a principal and assistant principal for the Alamance-Burlington School System. She began her career as a high school AP chemistry teacher in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Dr. Hardy has an impressive academic background as well, including a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Appalachian State University. She also went on to obtain a master’s degree in school administration and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Hardy looks forward to the opportunity to lead the Lexington City Schools and to become an active member of the community. In her spare time, Dr. Hardy enjoys cooking, spending time with family and friends and hot yoga.  “I am so excited to partner with the Lexington City School Board and community at large to ensure positive outcomes for all children, socially, emotionally, and academically.”

Please join the board in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Nakia Hardy as the new superintendent of the Lexington City Schools.
