With new field in the works, Lexington football hires former assistant Charles Morman as interim head coach
Lexington Senior High announced Monday that Charles Morman Jr. has been named the school's interim head football coach.
Morman will replace Eric Brown, who went 0-15 in two seasons as coach.
"Coach Mormon's got a great football pedigree, great knowledge of the game, and the kids really love him," Lexington athletic director Ronnie Beverly said.
"He loves the school, he loves the community, everybody knows him and I think he'll do an excellent job of building our program."
Morman has spent the last 15 years teaching physical education at Lexington High, with 12 years on the football coaching staff as an assistant and coordinator.
A Richmond High alum and Rockingham native, Morman was a Shrine Bowl selection as a senior and a graduate of Catawba College with a master's degree from Jackson State. His wife, Brittany, is an educator in Guilford County and they have two children; Chloe (6) and Grayson (1).
"My goal is to build better husbands and fathers," Morman said. "As long as I'm doing that, everything else will take care of itself.
"I like to create relationships, I like teaching young men to be champions on and off the field."
Although Morman's title is interim coach, Beverly said he doesn't expect any changes leading into the 2022-23 football season.
"At this stage, it would be difficult to find someone to come in on such short notice and do the job that we need done," Beverly said.
"Coach Morman knows our kids and I think that's something we really need at this time. If things work out, who knows? I have a lot of faith in Coach Mormon."
One thing high on Morman's list is to establish a junior varsity team at Lexington.
"He's pushing for a jayvee program, even if the numbers are small, so these student-athletes can develop their talents," Beverly said.
Most of Morman's roster of Yellow Jackets will be sophomores next season.
"It's big to help build that young core," he said.
Morman will be Lexington's third coach in four years. Before Brown, the Yellow Jackets went 1-10 in 2019 under DeVore Holman during his first and only year as coach.
Brown joined the Jackets after winning a 4-AA state championship as a co-defensive coordinator at Vance.
Lexington’s last deep run in the playoffs was in 2009 when the Yellow Jackets reached the 2-A state semifinals. In 1985 and '86, the team won back-to-back state championships with Beverly a star running back.
When the next season starts, Lexington will be playing on a newly renovated turf field, the result of a $1.5 million project that shows the school district's commitment to student-athletes and the community.
"I have a vision for the program," Morman said.
"You've got to have a plan. You've got to have a partnership with the student-athletes, the community.
"It'll be key to make sure we're setting the foundation and making sure these young men are doing things the right way, the Lexington way."
