Melissa Blackburn: New Principal for Pickett Elementary School Smiling

Mrs. Melissa Blackburn

Principal

Dear Pickett Elementary Families,

I am truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the Principal at Pickett Elementary School. I am excited about the journey ahead and look forward to a fantastic school year filled with learning, growth, and collaboration alongside our administration team, teachers, students, families, and the entire community.

A little about my background: I earned my undergraduate degree in Mental Disabilities from High Point University and later completed a graduate degree in Education with a concentration in Special Education. I hold certifications in Exceptional Children Director and Leadership, Elementary Education (K-6), and School Administration through the University of North Carolina Greensboro’s Principal Preparation for Excellence and Equity in Rural Schools (PPEERS) program. Before joining South Lexington, I taught Special Education for 13 years at Pickett Elementary School and for five years at Fort Dorchester Elementary School in Summerville, South Carolina. Most recently, I served as Assistant Principal at South Lexington School and Developmental Center for three years.

I am ecstatic to return to Pickett Elementary and proud to be a part of the Jacket Family as we work together to inspire every student to “Be Somebody.” My top priorities will always be the safety of your children and fostering their love of learning.

I am excited about the possibilities this school year holds and look forward to partnering with you to ensure your child’s growth and success.

Thank you for trusting us with your child’s Education. Together, we will make this a fantastic year!

Mrs. Lakeshia Wilson

Assistant Principal

It is with great excitement and heartfelt gratitude that I embrace my transition to Pickett Elementary School as Assistant Principal for the 2025–2026 school year. After three incredible years of service at Lexington Middle School, I am honored to continue my leadership journey within Lexington City Schools. There is no doubt that I absolutely loved providing my service to the HIVE, and I will forever cherish the relationships, growth, and unforgettable moments we shared.

As I look ahead to this new chapter at Pickett Elementary, I am filled with enthusiasm about the opportunity to support our scholars and partner with dedicated educators, families, and the school community. I am committed to building on the strong foundation already in place and helping every student feel seen, heard, and successful.

A proud Lexington native, I’ve had the privilege of serving in Lexington City Schools for 15 years. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from UNC-Asheville, earned my K–6 Licensure in 2010, and completed my Master’s in Executive Leadership Studies from Gardner-Webb University in 2019. I am married and a proud mom of a vibrant 7-year-old Yellow Jacket whose energy and curiosity keep life exciting! I’m also a committed lifelong learner, currently pursuing my doctoral degree at High Point University to deepen my impact and grow as an educational leader.

I'm eager to get started at Pickett Elementary, to listen and learn from you, and to serve our school with pride, purpose, and passion.

Here’s to a wonderful new beginning!

Warm regards,
Mrs. LaKeshia Wilson
