Why reading at home is important:

  • Builds vocabulary: Reading and listening to stories help children learn new words and understand their meanings.

  • Strengthens comprehension: Discussing characters, asking questions, and retelling stories help children understand what they read.

  • Supports reading fluency: Guided reading aloud and repeated practice help children read more accurately, smoothly, and with expression.

  • Supports learning across subjects: Strong reading comprehension helps children understand science, social studies, math, and other schoolwork.

  • Strengthens family connections: Sharing books creates opportunities for conversation, closeness, and positive time together.

  • Encourages a love of reading: Enjoyable read-aloud experiences help children develop an interest in books and reading.
