Elementary school media center set up for Books on Break with tables filled with a wide selection of books arranged for student selection.

Now in its second year, Lexington City Schools’ Books on Break initiative continues to expand access to literacy by providing students with the opportunity to select and take home books to keep, supporting the development of personal home libraries and extending learning beyond the classroom.

At Pickett Elementary, the initiative was implemented through a structured, full-day rotation schedule designed to ensure equitable access and a consistent experience for all students. More than 15 class groups across multiple grade levels participated, visiting the media center in timed intervals throughout the day.

During each rotation, students selected up to 10 books of their choice, resulting in hundreds of books distributed and expanding access to literacy resources. Teachers and staff supported the process by guiding students through selection while maintaining a focus on student choice, ownership, and engagement.

The structured model supported efficient distribution while reinforcing immediate interaction with books, as students organized their selections and began exploring their materials before returning to class.

As the initiative continues, the same rotation model will be implemented across additional schools, reinforcing a consistent and scalable approach to expanding access across the district.

Books on Break reflects a broader commitment within Lexington City Schools to remove barriers, increase access, and create intentional opportunities for students to engage with learning beyond the classroom.
