Dr. Judy Richards
Principal, South Lexington School and Developmental Center
I am honored to serve as the Principal of South Lexington School and Developmental Center, where I have the privilege of working alongside dedicated educators, staff, students, and families to create a supportive and engaging learning environment. With more than 20 years of experience in education, I have taught and led at the elementary, middle, and secondary levels, gaining a deep understanding of the diverse needs of students and the importance of building strong school communities.
As a member of the Lexington community for more than 30 years, I am deeply committed to the success of our students and families. My own children were educated within Lexington City Schools, which has strengthened my connection to our district and reinforced my belief in the power of public education. Throughout my career, I have sought opportunities to serve this community by building partnerships, securing resources, and advocating for programs that support student achievement and well-being.
At South Lexington School and Developmental Center, I believe in educating the whole child. Our students come to us with unique strengths, talents, and challenges, and it is our responsibility to provide the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral supports they need to thrive. We work collaboratively with families, community partners, and Lexington City Schools to ensure every student has access to a strong network of support and opportunities for success.
I am passionate about helping students develop critical thinking skills, emotional regulation strategies, self-confidence, and positive conflict-resolution skills that will serve them throughout their lives. By fostering meaningful relationships, maintaining high expectations, and creating a culture of respect and belonging, we empower students to reach their full potential.
I am proud to be a part of the South Lexington School and Developmental Center family and look forward to continuing our work together as we inspire students to grow, learn, and become their very best every day.

This is my 13th year in LCS as a school administrator and my 26th year in education, including 13 years as a special education teacher. I am a proud graduate of Winston-Salem State University, UNC Greensboro, and Walden University, and I am truly a lifelong learner who loves to grow and help others do the same!
A little about me—I have a super-spoiled Shorkie, Madyson Annalise, two brothers who are educators, and the best mom and dad ever! Family and education mean so much to me.
I am excited to serve alongside our students, families, staff, and community partners as we make this a year filled with fun, growth, learning, and support!

Mrs. Sonya Cooper
Welcome to Preschool! I am so excited for our youngest learners to enter the classrooms. This year will be filled with learning and growth, which is all wrapped up in the magic of preschool. In preschool, we have fun and learn through play and active exploration of the educational classroom. Each classroom is designed to foster the development of social, motor, and academic skills. South Lexington Preschool is a “5 star” rated daycare licensed facility by the state of North Carolina. Our staff strives to maintain the highest standards set forth by the state.
As the school year starts, this will be my 30th year working for Lexington City Schools. I was a preschool teacher for 20 years before moving into the position of Preschool Coordinator. My experience is in providing special education services for preschool students. My goal is for all students to have a positive preschool experience full of wonder and learning. I enjoy working with families to meet the needs of children as they start their educational journey in school. Communication is the key to success! Please do not hesitate to contact me for assistance.
