Sisk, Stephanie

WELCOME to Kindergarten! I would like to take this time to introduce myself.   My name is Ms. Stephanie Sisk.  I began teaching Kindergarten in 1999. I graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in elementary education and later received my master’s in education from Winston-Salem State University. I love children, being outside, animals, reading and camping. I will do everything possible to ensure that your child has a successful year!

Your child is special to me.  I want your child to LOVE Kindergarten and come away with positive memories of this year. I want your child to have a love of reading in order for your child to learn more information and for enjoyment.  We will begin our year by visiting an exciting place called Letterland. It is a place where letters come alive and say or sing their sound. You may hear your child singing about Abbie Apple and all her friends at home. In math, we will sing fun counting songs and work on counting objects in our room. We will learn about shapes, colors, numbers, patterns, likenesses and differences, sorting and more!

Your child will have important items in Kindergarten such as homework, take-home readers, behavior reports, letters and all kinds of information. In order to make keeping up with all these items easy for your child, I will give your child a Bee Binder (Bring Everything Everyday). It is simply a binder with pockets for all the information that your child needs for school.

Throughout the year, I will communicate with you through Class Dojo, telephone calls, notes, newsletters, and conferences. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. Please call South Lexington (336-242-1544), send me a dojo, note, or email me at ssisk@lexcs.org .

Kindest Regards,

Ms. Sisk

Homework

Please review your child's binder and complete review sheet and make sure your child reads his or her take-home reader every night.

Classroom / Grade-Level Expectations

Dear Parent,

In order to guarantee your child, and all the students in our classroom,  have the learning climate they deserve, we utilize a “Happy Camper Superstar Student” discipline plan.

Our Rules

  1. Listen to others

  2. Walk inside the school

  3. Use a quiet voice

  4. Follow directions quickly

  5. Be kind to others

Remember- We are all friends!

Our students are Happy CAMPERS:

Caring,

Attentive,

Mindful,

Positive,

Engaged,

Respectful,

Superstars

Outstanding- The student has gone beyond the call! (You have done an outstanding job today!) The student might have helped a friend or did a task without being told.  A sticker or a prize out of the prize box may be rewarded for exceptional behavior.

Great Job- The student has been a SUPERSTAR today! They were caught sharing, learning, listening, and being great helpers. This is the way SUPERSTAR students behave so everyone can learn in a great environment.

Unfortunately,  sometimes even Happy Campers make poor choices.

Stop and Think /1st consequence- The student receives a verbal warning. The

“ STAR” will be moved but just as a visual reminder to get back on track. This is just a warning… (Students should think…”Time for me to think about getting back on track.”) I would encourage parents to focus on colors and NOT if the star stick moved. Green is a good day whether the child stayed in the sky or moved to green.

2nd poor choice consequence - The student continues to make poor decisions. There will be a yellow mark on their behavior chart. The student will lose free choice of center and other privileges. They will move their “STAR”  to yellow.  (Students should think…

” I decided not to change my behavior so I chose to face the consequences.”)

This provides a visual reminder to the student to correct the behavior.

3rd poor choice consequence -Parent will be  Contacted - Student moves “STAR” to the Parent Contact.  A red X is placed in the behavior chart. A small note will be written on the behavior chart. The student will be asked to think about his/her choices.  ALL privileges will be taken away.   If needed, the student will be sent to another room or separate place in our room for a cool down. Following a student's “cool down” he/she will discuss with the teacher the reasons such discipline was necessary.   (Students should think…”I decided not to change my behavior,  so my parents need to know how I acted today.”)  In cases of physical contact where a student does not keep his or her hands or feet to themselves then the student is automatically placed on red. Also, if another teacher or adult calls on a student in the hall or classroom then a student is placed on red.

4th consequence - Phone Call home and phone conference and possible in person conference depending on behavior - The student is very disruptive to the learning environment. ( I disrupted not only my learning, but I interfered with other student’s learning and lost my self-control multiple times.) In some instances an administrator will be contacted for a student’s behavior. If an administrator is contacted, you will be notified via dojo or phone call.

Please check your child’s behavior sheet Daily and initial.  Please praise your child for a Good Day/ green!  You will see a star with no markings indicating the student kept the “Star” on green. If it is marked yellow then you may need to discuss ways to make better choices. If your child is on red, then please reinforce the rules and go over ways to have a better day. Please have patience and understanding the first few weeks as we practice rules and expectations. I will contact you if I feel that we need to discuss your child’s behavior. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email, send a note, or call.

Sincerely,

Ms. Sisk  sstaub@lexcs.org 336-242-1544
