Ciara Johnson
If you hear music coming from the auditorium, there's a good chance you've found my class!
Hello, hello! I'm Ms. Johnson, and I have the privilege of teaching Theatre Arts here at Lexington Senior High School. I believe the stage is so much more than lights and applause. It's a place where students discover confidence, find their voices, take creative risks, and learn that it's okay to be unapologetically themselves.
Before becoming a theatre teacher, I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Professional Theatre, and I still believe every day deserves a little drama. The good kind, of course! Whether we're performing Shakespeare, producing musicals, creating original works, or laughing our way through improv games, my space is sure to be filled with creativity, collaboration, and plenty of unforgettable moments.
When I'm not directing productions or helping students prepare for the spotlight, you'll usually find me cheering on my three amazing children in their own spotlights, tackling coursework, planning my next big project, or finding new ways to advocate for and inspire creativity, confidence, and growth in the lives of others - both on and off the stage.
My classroom motto is simple: Confidence is built one brave choice at a time! The greatest performances don't come from being fearless - they come from having the courage to step into the spotlight anyway. That's the same lesson I hope my students carry with them long after the curtain falls.
Welcome to our theatre family... now let's make some magic!
Classroom / Grade-Level Expectations |
|---|
I teach Beginning, Intermediate, and Honors Theatre Arts for students in grades 9–12, providing opportunities for all learners to develop creativity, confidence, collaboration, and performance skills through the art of theatre.
In this classroom, everyone has a role to play. Whether you're a seasoned performer or stepping on stage for the first time, you're expected to contribute to a safe, respectful, and creative environment.
Be Present.
Come to class on time, prepared, and ready to participate. Theatre is a hands-on art. You learn by doing.
Be Respectful.
Respect yourself, your classmates, your teacher, our performance spaces, costumes, props, and equipment. Every person deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued.
Take Creative Risks.
Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Growth happens when you're willing to try something new, even if it's challenging.
Work as an Ensemble.
Support one another, collaborate positively, and celebrate each other's successes. Great theatre is built on teamwork.
Give Your Best Effort.
Commit to every rehearsal, performance, and assignment with a positive attitude. Excellence comes from consistency, not perfection.
Be Responsible.
Take ownership of your learning, complete assignments on time, communicate when you need help, and care for classroom materials.
Maintain Professionalism.
Use appropriate language, follow directions, and demonstrate behavior that reflects the expectations of a rehearsal and performance environment.
Our Classroom Motto:
Confidence is built one brave choice at a time.
Every rehearsal, every performance, and every challenge is an opportunity to grow. In this classroom, we encourage one another, embrace mistakes as part of learning, and show up with courage every given day.
Homework |
|---|
Homework in Theatre Arts looks a little different than it does in most classes.
When homework is given, it may include:
Character analysis and character development
Memorizing lines, music, choreography, or blocking
Script reading and annotation
Production research or design planning
Rehearsing scenes or monologues
Studying for quizzes, tests, or upcoming performances
Students involved in productions should also expect to spend additional time outside of class preparing for rehearsals and performances. Success on stage depends on consistent practice, preparation, and personal responsibility.
