Lexington City Schools students and staff were recognized earlier this week during a City Council meeting as the City of Lexington officially proclaimed April as National Poetry Month.
Presented by the Mayor in partnership with Arts Davidson County and Davidson Local, the proclamation highlighted the importance of poetry, literacy, and creative expression across the Lexington community.
Students and staff representing Lexington City Schools’ poetry programming participated in the April 13 meeting, where they joined community partners in receiving the proclamation and shared reflections on the impact of poetry in their educational experience.
“This recognition speaks to the meaningful ways our students are engaging with literacy and the arts,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Rodney Shotwell. “Poetry provides students with an opportunity to express themselves, build confidence, and connect their learning to the world around them.”
Across the district, students are actively engaged in writing and arts-integrated learning experiences that support creativity, communication, and critical thinking. Events like this reinforce Lexington City Schools’ commitment to developing student voice and fostering a well-rounded educational experience.
The City’s proclamation and collaboration with community partners further strengthens the connection between Lexington City Schools and the broader Lexington community, emphasizing a shared investment in student success and the arts.
