Headshot of Corey Thompson, newly named Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Lexington Senior High School.

Lexington Senior High School is proud to announce the hiring of Corey Thompson as the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach for the Yellow Jackets basketball program.

Thompson brings extensive experience, leadership, and basketball knowledge to Lexington Senior High School. He is known for his passion for developing student athletes both on and off the court. Throughout his coaching career at Winston-Salem State University and St. Pauls High School, he has built a strong reputation within the basketball community.

As a student athlete at Winston-Salem State University under legendary coach Rickey Duckett, Thompson helped lead the Rams to back-to-back CIAA championships. He was a four-year letterman and made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 1998 to 2002. Thompson earned the team’s Most Improved Player Award in 1999, and he and his teammates were inducted into the C.E. “Big House” Gaines Hall of Fame in 2012.

Thompson spent eight seasons as the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach at St. Pauls High School. During his tenure, the program won consecutive conference championships and advanced to eight straight state playoff appearances. In his first season, St. Pauls advanced to the second round of the state playoffs after defeating the reigning state champions.

In the summer of 2024, Thompson was named the tenth head coach in the history of the Winston-Salem State University men’s basketball program.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Thompson to Lexington Senior High School,” said Benjamin Robinson, Athletic Director at Lexington Senior High School. “His experience, character, and commitment to excellence make him the ideal leader for our men’s basketball program. We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our student athletes both on and off the court.”

Thompson’s hiring reflects Lexington Senior High School’s commitment to developing student athletes who excel in the classroom, compete with integrity, demonstrate strong character, and are prepared for success beyond graduation.

Lexington Senior High School looks forward to the future of Yellow Jacket basketball under Thompson’s leadership and welcomes him and his family to the Lexington community.
