The countdown to the first day of school has begun, and Lexington City Schools is preparing to welcome students back on Monday, August 10, for the start of the 2026–2027 school year.
Throughout the summer, teachers, administrators, support staff, and district employees have remained hard at work preparing classrooms, participating in professional learning, supporting summer programs, strengthening community partnerships, and ensuring every school is ready to provide students with a successful start to the new school year.
As Lexington City Schools begins another year of learning, Superintendent Dr. Ron Anthony said the district's work will continue to be guided by three expectations.
High Expectations. Accountability. Urgency.
"Every new school year brings an opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of our students," Anthony said. "By maintaining high expectations, holding ourselves accountable, and acting with urgency, we will continue creating schools where every student is challenged, supported, and prepared for success. We look forward to welcoming our students back and partnering with our families for another outstanding school year."
As families prepare for the first day of school, Lexington City Schools encourages parents and guardians to review the following important dates, events, and reminders.
Important Dates
Cory Holt Foundation Back-to-School Giveaway
Saturday, August 1
8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Parking lot behind Lexington Senior High School
Lexington City Schools is grateful for its continued partnership with the Cory Holt Foundation, which will once again host its annual Back-to-School Giveaway.
The event will provide school supplies and other essential resources to help students begin the school year prepared and ready to learn. Families are encouraged to take advantage of this community event before the start of school.
Districtwide Open House
Thursday, August 6
Open House provides students and families an opportunity to meet teachers, visit classrooms, ask questions, and become familiar with school expectations before the first day of school.
Open House Schedule:
Elementary Schools
12:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Lexington Middle School
3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Lexington Senior High School
4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Attending Open House is one of the best ways for students and families to begin the school year with confidence and establish connections with teachers and school staff.
First Day of School
Students return to Lexington City Schools on Monday, August 10.
Teachers and staff are excited to welcome students back for another year of learning, growth, and opportunity.
Families are encouraged to arrive prepared by reviewing transportation information, school expectations, and district policies before the first day of school.
Back-to-School Immunizations
Before the first day of school, families should ensure their students have received all required immunizations.
North Carolina law requires students entering kindergarten, 7th grade, and 12th grade to meet additional immunization requirements before attending school. An updated immunization record is due by the first day of school. Families have 30 calendar days from the first day of school to provide required documentation. Students who do not provide the required documentation within that timeframe will not be permitted to attend school until the requirements are met.
Families needing immunizations or additional information may contact the Davidson County Health Department, located at 915 Greensboro Street, Lexington, NC 27292, by calling 336-242-2510. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Where's the Bus App
Families whose students ride a Lexington City Schools bus are encouraged to download the Where's the Bus app before school begins.
The app allows parents and guardians to:
Track their student's school bus in real time.
Receive estimated arrival times.
Better plan morning and afternoon routines.
Download the app through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, select Lexington City Schools, and enter your student's information to begin tracking your child's bus.

Clear Backpack Policy
The Lexington City Schools Clear Backpack Policy remains in effect for all students during the 2026–2027 school year.
Students may bring:
One clear backpack made of clear plastic, vinyl, or similar transparent material.
One additional small bag measuring no larger than 6 inches by 9 inches by 5 inches.
One non-clear lunchbox, which may be subject to search.
Backpacks with colored trim, colored straps, mesh pockets, leather-reinforced corners, and small logos are permitted, provided the contents remain clearly visible.
Exceptions are available for medically necessary items following proper inspection by school administration. Athletic bags, spirit bags, instrument cases, and diaper bags accompanying an infant are also permitted in accordance with district procedures.
Families are encouraged to review Board of Education Policy 5.3.3 – Clear Backpack Policy before the first day of school.
Cell Phone Policy
To help protect instructional time and minimize distractions, Lexington City Schools' Cell Phone Policy remains in effect throughout the 2026–2027 school year.
Elementary Schools: Cell phones are not permitted during the school day.
Lexington Middle School: Cell phones are not permitted during the school day.
Lexington Senior High School: Students may use cell phones only during their designated lunch period.
Students are expected to follow the district's Cell Phone Policy. Violations are addressed through progressive disciplinary consequences in accordance with Board of Education Policy 5.3.4.7 – Use of Cell Phones and Wireless Communication Devices.
