The Lexington City Schools Board of Education approved the appointment of Ms. Sharon Fennell as the district’s new Chief Academic Officer during its August 4 meeting.

Ms. Fennell brings more than 27 years of experience in public education. Throughout her career, she has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, district administrator, and talent acquisition leader, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of teaching and learning, school leadership, strategic staffing, and organizational development.

“Ms. Fennell brings a proven record of instructional leadership, school improvement, and developing strong teams,” Superintendent Dr. Ron Anthony said. “Her experience and commitment to educational excellence will be tremendous assets as we work with high expectations, accountability, and urgency to improve outcomes and expand opportunities for every student.”

Most recently, Ms. Fennell served as principal of East Garner Magnet Middle School in Wake County Public School System. During her tenure, she led the school through significant academic growth and implemented systems that strengthened instructional practices, improved student outcomes, and expanded learning opportunities. Under her leadership, the school earned recognition as a Magnet School of Distinction.

Ms. Fennell has also held leadership positions in talent acquisition and school administration, where she supported strategic staffing initiatives, leadership development, and organizational improvement. Her experience across elementary, middle, and high school settings has given her a broad perspective on the instructional continuum and the supports necessary for students to succeed.

She holds certifications in school administration and is both an International Baccalaureate School Leader and an AVID Certified Leader. She is passionate about developing leaders, strengthening instructional systems, and ensuring every student has access to high-quality teaching and meaningful learning opportunities.

“I am honored to join Lexington City Schools and excited to partner with our principals, teachers, staff, families, and community,” Ms. Fennell said. “Together, we will build upon the district’s strengths, advance academic excellence, and ensure every student receives the support and opportunities needed to succeed.”

As Chief Academic Officer, Ms. Fennell will lead the district’s academic programs and work alongside school and district leaders to strengthen instruction, support educators, and advance student achievement throughout Lexington City Schools.
