On behalf of the North Carolina School Library Media Association (NCSLMA), it is with immense pride that we announce Terry Fernung as the 2025 Region 5 Librarian of the Year. This prestigious honor recognizes Terry’s exceptional dedication, innovation, and leadership in transforming the school library into a dynamic center for learning and discovery.

Terry’s philosophy embodies the true spirit of a modern media center—one that serves as more than a place for books. Under his leadership, the library has become a vibrant hub for exploration, literacy, technology integration, and lifelong learning. His vision for a student-centered, inclusive, and ever-evolving library space inspires colleagues and students alike.

Through creative programming, engaging lessons, and hands-on instruction, Terry has empowered students to develop essential media and information literacy skills. His initiatives encourage critical thinking, responsible information use, and confidence in navigating digital tools—skills essential for success in the 21st century.

His passion for literature is infectious, sparking a culture of curiosity and excitement about reading. Students are not only reading more but are also beginning to see themselves as lifelong readers.

This award stands as a testament to Terry Fernung’s dedication, creativity, and vision—qualities that have made a lasting impact on students, staff, and the wider school community. He will be formally recognized at the upcoming NCSLMA Conference in October, where the 2025 North Carolina School Librarian of the Year will be chosen from among the eight regional honorees.

Congratulations, Terry, on this well-deserved recognition!
