It’s a great day to be a Yellow Jacket!

On October 27, Superintendent Dr. Nakia Hardy and leaders from Pickett Elementary shared recent successes and community partnerships with the Lexington City Council.

Dr. Hardy provided districtwide updates, including the expansion of the Spanish Immersion program at South Lexington, recognition of Mr. Terry Fernung as the 2025 North Carolina School Library Media Association Media Coordinator of the Year, and the circulation of more than 11,000 books this fall, reflecting a growing love of reading among students. She also highlighted the vital role of local businesses, churches, and civic partners—such as Canopy Mortgage—in investing directly in Lexington’s schools.

Pickett Elementary was featured as a school highlight, with Principal Melissa Blackburn and Assistant Principal LaKeshia Wilson speaking about the transformative impact of community partnerships. They shared stories of support from organizations like Love to Life, which has provided resources ranging from school supplies and furniture to housing support and even transportation for families.

Together, these efforts demonstrate how Lexington City Schools continues to Level Up, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to Thrive in the Hive and Be Somebody.
